SUMMONING There are various accounts of how an Eelum responds to a summon. Some say they hear a plea that they wish to answer and call out in return. Others state they had no choice and they were snatched from Taozen. And of course there’s a few who just stay silent on the matter or make up some wild and crazy tale. Regardless of how that individual Eelum was summoned they do hold the ability to deny the pact in the beginning.
If upon being summoned an Eelum can see true wickedness in a person they can refuse to serve them. Refusing a summon and returning to Taozen takes a lot of energy out of an Eelum, especially if they are younger. Younger Eelum can fall victim to being resummoned shortly after the first time. If this happens they will be forced into the pact or must fight for their lives if they truly do not wish to serve the individual who summoned them. More experienced Eelum will be able to refuse a second time, however, they will not be able to return to Taozen until their energy renews. They will simply teleport to a location far away from where the summon occurred. It is not uncommon for the Eelum to be asked by another individual during this resting period for them to form a pact. Depending on the circumstances and if the Eelum feels they can trust that person or not they might ignore the request or accept it. Since it is a request and not a summon, they can choose without repercussions. Only requests are a one time ordeal. They do not hold the same bindings as a summon. If an Eelum were to accept their summon, they are bound to the conditions of the summoning. If the individual who summoned them is requiring a lifetime of servitude then that Eelum will be bound to that direct bloodline until it exists no more. There are other reasons why an Eelum might be summoned, such as helping with winning a war, protecting a certain individual, to protect land or to watch over a generation. Most individuals who summon Eelum have a vague idea of what they look like and what to expect. There have been tales of Eelum being summoned accidentally. Depending on the world they are summoned into they are seen as different things. Some summoners will not allow the Eelum to be seen outside of the home due to fear of what outsiders might try or think. Others will call them demons or angels and flaunt their pact openly. There are some summoners who require their Eelum to remain in their miniature form at all times unless during combat. Truly it depends on the individual’s situation.
If an Eelum no longer wishes to be a part of a pact, it is difficult for them to end their contract depending on what it is. In many cases it would result in the Eelum having to fail their contract and allowing someone to be killed or having to kill their master and their master’s bloodline. These acts are considered highly taboo. It depends on the situation and how badly the Eelum wishes to be free of their contract. It is not a decision they take lightly and they will think it over numerous times before making their choice. Some Eelum will chicken out and remain in servitude for the duration of the contract. Others will take the plunge and do whatever it takes to be free (such as killing their master). Not all situations are considered as drastic. If the Eelum decides to talk to their master and they can reach an agreement the pact can be altered or even ended on mutual terms. There are also cases in which the master acts out against the Eelum and it is their acts that break the contract (such as bringing great harm to the Eelum by their own hand) or simply decides they no longer need them. In that case the Eelum will be free to go. There are cases where the original summoner will then re-summon the same Eelum. If they parted on good terms, the Eelum will often agree to another pact. If the pact was broken due to abuse, the Eelum will be able to ignore the summon. It is one the rare times a summon can be ignored. Once a pact is broken, the Eelum will lose their horns. This is to symbolize the fact they were not successful in their duties, regardless of the reason. If the Eelum makes a new pact with the same master that the previous one was broken, then they will gain an immense spiritual and magical power boost.
Eelum can be summoned in two ways: through a summoning spell or a strong wish/desire.
